Yeah, on normal in Felghana you shouldn't run into situations where you're suddenly dealing 0 damage. Hated that about Napishtim. A couple of bosses might make you think about going back and grabbing a level. A lot of people consider Felghana to be the most difficult Ys but the toughest bosses are in Origin and Ys 1.
Some of the characters and lore come across in each title, but for the most part, one can leap into the series at any point. I decided on a blind metaphorical leap of faith to two games, Ys Seven and the subject of this review, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, a remake of the third Ys game that originally appeared on the Super Nintendo.
On the lower difficulties, you'll notice that boss patterns include windows of vulnerability. As a general rule, those windows are shorter and riskier on Nightmare. You have to worry about new threats like counterattacks, extended animations, and arena hazards. It completely changes the dynamic of certain fights.

Oath in Felghana has a very different play style from Seven, 8 and Celceta. It's much more retro styled. I don't recall there being a lot of puzzles, but there is a little bit of platforming from a semi topdown perspective. You have a simple sword attack and a couple of special moves or spells that you can change up as you go.
Note: I did this on GOG ys_oath_in_felghana_ Editing the ysf_win file, will allow to use: F2 to Level Up F3 Gain Gold F4 Gain Raval Ore F5 Fill HP
With the Silver Chime equipped, you can now kill the skeleton enemies and they will drop loot (some gold and 5 to 10 Raval ore). You can either go back to the platform area by backtracking or follow the path with Doonos to get back to the area with the square hole (this path is longer, but has a brown chest with some Raval ore on the way).
The other thing to note about bosses is that on normal if you literally spend like 2 minutes of straight grinding you will ROFL stomp them. this game has a combo system where you hit enemies a gauge will fill giving you a EXP mutipler. usually right before bosses is a pretty decent mob of enemies that you can litearlly grind a extra level or two and you can flat out ROFL stomp the bosses ...
Continue north to the next part of the cave, then head east, following the path to a hole in the ground. Go ahead and drop down into it, where you'll land beside an urn with 1600 Gold. Drop down from here and make your way back to the hole, then jump up to the path to the northeast.
I'm enjoying this one much more than I enjoyed Ys7, and I enjoyed that quite a bit. From the mechanics to the storyas barebones as it is, it all seems to resonate a bit better. The story in Felghana, so far, is nowhere near as grand as 7, but, on the flipside, it's succinct, and feels far more characterdriven.
There will not be a lot of grinding no matter what difficulty you choose in this game. You'll just get a different experience curve. Basically, the experience given by enemies in each new area increases at a sharp exponential curve, so you'll quickly hit a wall where it becomes next to impossible to level any further without spending huge amounts of time (which you should never bother with).
#3 EdgarAllenSwole Apr 29, 2018 2:14pm My only advice is to avoid wasting time on maids and magicians. The reward doesn't justify the aneurysms caused by chasing them around. I seem to remember grinding versus those leaping knights. They dole out decent EXP and become trivial once you pin them against a wall.
Oath is one of my favorites, both because of the gameplay (love Napishtim engine), the music, story, and the difficulty. Level grinding will help you immensely. Bosses and monsters are tuned to a specific level. If you're getting hammered, try grinding out a level.
Felghana, by contrast, feels much more constructed. Ys Seven's overworld was vast, but fun to explore. Felghana's overworld is a straight path to your destination, which feels just a step above a menu. Felghana makes up for this by having huge, sprawling dungeons typical to the series, something Seven didn't do.
I grind sometimes. I enjoy grinding here and there to buy all the equipments available. When I played Origin, think I grinded 23 levels before the bosses in each area. Sometimes 2 levels before a midboss that beat me, but I felt that need at almost every save point in Felghana. And the grinding really makes a huge difference.

Inherit armor lv. expand cap; 05 pt; You don't start the game with the equipment you beat the game with, but when you do obtain new equipment, it will all begin with the same level it was when you beat the game.
Awesome, you rock :) I'll prob grind to 55 before finishing the last guy then. Its also good to know that buying more Elixirs will end up being a waste. I'll just save my gold and buy them over again in a new game+ for a lot cheaper ;) Any idea how much it costs to upgrade your weapons to level 9 in NG+? I'm at 8500 Raval Ore atm lol.

It should be very easy to do that by just replacing the music in the game folder, though not so sure about actually obtaining all of the turbografx ost..
